Yes, brewed tea does go bad. Left out at room temperature, it should be tossed after about 8 hours. In the fridge, in a covered container, it tastes best within 1 to 2 days and keeps for about 3 to 5 days.

I love making a big pitcher of tea, but brewed tea doesn’t keep forever. Its flavor fades, it can turn bitter, and given enough time, bacteria can grow. Here is how long brewed tea lasts, how to tell when it has gone bad, and how to store it so it stays fresh.

    Quick Look

    • ⏰ Room temperature: about 8 hours
    • ❄️ Refrigerator: best in 1 to 2 days, up to about 3 to 5 days
    • 🥛 Tea with milk: refrigerate within 2 hours
    • 👃 Signs it’s bad: sour smell, slimy texture, or mold
    • 🍯 Tip: sweeten when you serve, not before you store

    Quick Answer

    Does brewed tea go bad?

Yes. Brewed tea left at room temperature should be thrown out after about 8 hours. Stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, it tastes best within 1 to 2 days and generally keeps for about 3 to 5 days. Toss it sooner if it smells sour, feels slimy, or shows any mold.

How Long Does Brewed Tea Last?

    • At room temperature: about 8 hours. After that, bacteria can start to grow, so pour it out.
    • In the refrigerator: the flavor is best within 1 to 2 days. After that it gets flat, and around 3 to 5 days it is time to make a fresh batch.
    • Sweetened tea: sugar gives bacteria something to feed on, so drink sweet tea on the sooner side.
    • Tea with milk: treat it like milk. Refrigerate within 2 hours and drink it within a day.

How to Tell if Brewed Tea Has Gone Bad

Trust your senses. Throw the tea out if you notice any of these:

    • A sour or musty smell, instead of a fresh tea aroma.
    • A slimy or thick texture, or strands in the tea.
    • Mold or a film on the surface.
    • A fizzy or fermented taste.

Cloudy iced tea is not always a bad sign. Tea brewed hot and then chilled quickly often turns cloudy, and it is still fine to drink. Cloudiness together with a sour smell, though, means it is time to pour it out.

    How to Store Brewed Tea

A woman reaching into a refrigerator with a pitcher of iced tea on the door shelf.
    • Cool it, then chill it. Let hot tea cool briefly and get it into the fridge well within a few hours.
    • Use a covered container, like a glass jar, pitcher with a lid, or bottle. It keeps out fridge odors and air.
    • Remove the tea leaves or bags before storing, or the tea will keep steeping and turn bitter.
    • Keep it cold, on a shelf rather than the door if you can. A good iced tea maker with a lidded pitcher makes this easy.

Here is a helpful video on keeping tea fresh:

How to Make Brewed Tea Last Longer

    1. Don’t sweeten the whole batch. Add sugar or honey to each glass when you serve it.
    2. Brew it a little stronger if you plan to store it, so it still tastes good as the flavor fades or the ice melts.
    3. Start with good tea. Fresh, well stored leaves make tea that holds its flavor longer. Here is how to store loose leaf tea.
    4. Try cold brewing. Cold brew tea steeps in the fridge, so it stays cold from start to finish.
    5. Make smaller batches that you can finish in a day or two.

Iced Tea, Sun Tea, and Milk Tea

    • Iced tea follows the same rules. Keep it covered in the fridge and enjoy it within a few days. Try my hibiscus iced tea, blackberry iced tea, or orange spice iced tea.
    • Sun tea brews slowly in warm water, which can give bacteria a head start. For the same easy, mellow flavor, I prefer cold brew tea in the fridge.
    • Milk tea and lattes, like my iced chai latte, should be refrigerated within 2 hours and finished within a day.

Do Dry Tea Leaves Go Bad?

Dry tea is a different story. Loose leaf tea and tea bags don’t spoil the way brewed tea does, but they slowly lose flavor and aroma. Read more in does tea expire, and keep yours fresh with these loose leaf tea storage tips.

    Brewed Tea FAQs

How long can brewed tea sit out?

About 8 hours at room temperature. After that, throw it out, since bacteria can begin to grow.

How long does brewed tea last in the fridge?

It tastes best within 1 to 2 days and keeps for about 3 to 5 days in a covered container.

Can old brewed tea make you sick?

Tea that has sat out too long or shows signs of spoilage, like a sour smell, slimy texture, or mold, can carry bacteria. When in doubt, pour it out.

Why is my iced tea cloudy?

Tea brewed hot and chilled quickly often turns cloudy. It is harmless, but cloudiness with a sour smell means the tea has gone bad.

Does sweet tea go bad faster?

Yes. Sugar helps bacteria grow, so sweeten each glass when you serve it instead of sweetening the whole pitcher.

    Can you reheat brewed tea?

You can, as long as it was refrigerated and is still within a day or two, but the flavor won’t be as good as a fresh cup.

    The Bottom Line

Brewed tea goes bad, but storing it well buys you a few days. Get it into the fridge within a few hours, keep it covered, sweeten it when you serve it, and enjoy it within 3 to 5 days. When the flavor fades, a fresh pot is always the best cup.
