What is Blue Butterfly Pea Flower Tea?

The dried butterfly pea flower is used to make the tea. Dried butterfly pea flowers (with the botanical name Clitoria ternatea), which is often called Asian pigeonwings, blue tea, or fairy tea, is believed to have originated from Southeast Asian countries.

Its lovely, deep blue color comes from the dried flowers of the butterfly pea plant, which are also commonly used as a natural dye.

Butterfly pea flower tastes similar to chamomile and has a mild floral and slightly sweet taste. It’s an herbal tea, without caffeine, and makes a great tea to drink before bedtime.

Blue Butterfly tea also has color-changing properties. When you mix it with an acidic ingredient, like lime juice or lemon juice, it turns a pretty purple color. This makes it fun to also serve in a cocktail or mocktail.

What are the Benefits of Blue Butterfly Pea Flower Tea?

Not only is this blue butterfly pea flower latte a beautiful and delicious treat but there are also many health benefits. The tea contains several powerful antioxidants that have been found to support hair and skin health, stabilize blood sugar, and may help with brain function.

Butterfly pea flower tea has been used for centuries in ayurvedic medicine for stress reduction, as a memory enhancer, and antidepressant, and is known for its calming effects.

Ingredients You’ll Need for this Blue Tea Latte

Ingredients for Blue Butterfly Pea Latte.

Once you have the blue butterfly tea, this delicious latte comes together with simple ingredients. Here’s what you will need:

    • Butterfly Blue Pea Powder
    • Vanilla Extract
    • Cane Sugar
    • Oat Milk

    Directions

Step 1: Combine the cane sugar, vanilla extract, and ¼ cup of water in a small saucepan and place the saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat. Once the mixture begins to bubble gently, allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes or until it reaches a light golden color, stirring frequently.

Step 2: Remove the syrup from the heat, pour it into a small cup or jar, and set it aside to cool.

Step 3: Warm the remaining ½ cup of water in the microwave for a few seconds and combine it with the butterfly pea powder in a glass cup or jar. Using a milk frother, froth the mixture until it is fully combined and very foamy. Set aside.

Step 4: Pour one cup of oat milk into each of the ice-filled glasses.

Step 5: Pour 1-2 tablespoons of vanilla simple syrup into each glass and give each drink a quick stir.

Step 6: Pour half of the butterfly pea mixture into each glass. Serve the lattes immediately.

You can enjoy this latte hot or cold. Both ways are delicious and have a pretty blue color and a delightful butterfly pea flower tea taste.

    • To make a hot version of this latte, follow steps 1 and 2 the same as the iced version.

    • Pour the warmed oat milk into clear mugs, followed by 1 tablespoon of the vanilla simple syrup and the butterfly pea mixture. Stir and serve.

    Expert Tips

    • Precision in Water Temperature: Ensure your water reaches the specified temperature for brewing the Butterfly Blue Pea Flower Tea. This precision helps in extracting the optimal flavors, resulting in a rich and aromatic base for your latte.
    • Adjust Sweetness to Taste: Experiment with the sweetness level to match your palate. While the recipe includes a simple syrup for a mild sweetness, don’t hesitate to personalize it with more or less sugar or try alternative sweeteners like honey or agave syrup.
    • Mastering Frothing Techniques: Achieving a perfect foam is crucial for a delightful latte experience. If a frother isn’t available, the mason jar shaking method is effective. After frothing, remember to heat the milk in the microwave for a creamy texture.
    • Artistic Garnishing: Elevate both the visual appeal and flavor profile by adding a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. For an extra touch, consider incorporating crushed blue pea leaves as a creative garnish, providing a burst of color and a subtle hint of floral notes. Remember, the edible flowers can offer a unique twist to your latte.
