Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies are a classic treat for celebrating love, friendship, and sweet moments shared with family and friends. These heart-shaped sugar cookies are soft in the center, lightly crisp around the edges, and designed to hold their shape—making them perfect for decorating with icing, sprinkles, or festive Valentine colors. Whether you’re baking for a classroom party, Galentine’s Day, or a cozy afternoon tea, this recipe is reliable, simple, and beautiful every time.

What makes these Valentine sugar cookies stand out is how easy they are to work with. The dough rolls smoothly, cuts cleanly into heart shapes, and bakes without spreading.

They’re ideal for both beginners and experienced bakers, with decorating options ranging from quick and simple to more intricate designs. If you love festive baking that looks special without being complicated, these heart-shaped sugar cookies are sure to become a Valentine’s Day favorite recipe.

Valentine’s Day has always been extra special in our home because it’s also our wedding anniversary (Over 37 years). Every year, I love creating a fun and cozy atmosphere for my husband with homemade treats, a few thoughtful details, and plenty of sweets to share.

These cookies are one of my favorite ways to celebrate—simple, festive, and made with love. I often pair them with a few other Valentine desserts, or the Red Velvet Pancakes from the blog, for breakfast, to create a little dessert spread that feels special without being complicated. If it’s your special day in some way, I would love to hear about it.

    Ingredient Notes:

Ingredients on a table for Valentines Sugar Cookies.
    • Butter: Provides richness and flavor while helping create a tender, soft sugar cookie texture. Using room-temperature butter allows it to cream smoothly with the sugar.
    • Sugar: Sweetens the cookies and helps create a light, crisp edge while keeping the centers soft.
    • Egg: Acts as a binder that holds the dough together and adds moisture for structure and tenderness.
    • All-Purpose Flour: Gives the cookies their structure and stability, helping them hold their heart shape while baking.
    • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the overall flavor and adds warmth and depth to classic sugar cookies.

    Flavor Variations & Decorating Ideas

    Flavor Variations

    • Almond Sugar Cookies: Replace vanilla extract with almond extract for a classic bakery flavor.
    • Lemon Sugar Cookies: Add 1–2 teaspoons lemon zest to the dough for a fresh, citrus flavor.
    • Orange Sugar Cookies: Add 1 teaspoon orange zest for a subtle, sweet citrus twist.
    • Chocolate Sugar Cookies: Replace ¼ cup of the flour with unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolate version.
    • Strawberry Sugar Cookies: Add ½ teaspoon strawberry extract and tint the dough pink for a Valentine-ready look.

    Decorating Variations

    • Sprinkle Cookies: Skip the chocolate drizzle and decorate with sanding sugar or Valentine sprinkles before baking.
    • Chocolate-Dipped Cookies: Dip half of each baked cookie into melted chocolate and allow to set.
    • Royal Icing: Decorate with classic royal icing for detailed Valentine designs.
    • Glaze Icing: Use a simple powdered sugar glaze for quick and easy decorating.
    • Marbled Chocolate: Swirl two types of melted chocolate together for a decorative drizzle.

    Sugar Cookie Step-by-Step Directions

Step 1: In a large bowl, beat ½ cup room-temperature butter, ½ cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until light, creamy, and smooth.

Step 2: Mix in 1 egg, beating until fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Add 1¾ cups all-purpose flour and gently mix with a spatula just until a smooth dough forms. Do not overmix.

Step 3: Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and shape it into a flat rectangle. Freeze for at least 30 minutes to make the dough easier to roll and cut. Remove the dough from the freezer and let it sit for a few minutes if very firm. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about ¼ inch thick. Cut out heart shapes using cookie cutters.

Step 4: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the cookies for 7–8 minutes, just until the edges are set. The cookies should remain pale on top. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 5: Melt ½ cup of melting chocolate or chocolate chips, according to package instructions. (30 seconds at a time in the microwave). Drizzle over the cooled cookies.

Step 6: Immediately add Valentine’s Day–themed sprinkles before the chocolate sets.

    Sugar Cookie FAQs

Why did my Valentine sugar cookies spread?

Sugar cookies usually spread when the butter is too warm, or the dough wasn’t chilled long enough. Measuring flour correctly and rolling the dough evenly also helps heart-shaped cookies hold their shape.

Do I need to chill sugar cookie dough?

Chilling isn’t always required, but chilling the dough for 20–30 minutes helps prevent spreading and makes it easier to cut heart-shaped cookies cleanly.

How thick should sugar cookies be rolled?

For best results, roll the sugar cookie dough to about ¼ inch thick. This keeps the cookies soft while maintaining clean edges.

Can kids help decorate Valentine’s Day sugar cookies?

Absolutely. Sprinkles, sanding sugar, and adding glaze make decorating easy and fun for kids, especially for classroom parties.

Can I make heart-shaped sugar cookies ahead of time?

Yes. You can freeze the dough or baked cookies and decorate them closer to Valentine’s Day for the freshest results.
